North Shore Transformation
1/28/2007
It was clear during the initial walk through that the overall structure of the home had tremendous potential. We were most attracted to the size of the house and how it could be transformed into a more functional space to be enjoyed by both family and guests.
Just off the foyer was an existing dining room with a pass through to the kitchen. The dining room was relocated and the pass through was eliminated to create an inviting destination to study. Now a masculine library and music room complete with leather ceiling, generous crown molding, chair rail, grand piano and beautiful French doors awaits both friends and family. This relaxing and well appointed space communicates luxury and comfort as you enter the home.
The dining room was relocated to the rear of the house just off the kitchen. Oak plank covered ceiling and walls were replaced with drywall, added crown molding and chair rail were used to create a more formal environment. Two side windows were removed providing a more intimate space for dining. A serving area was created with the addition of a built-in buffet, including marble countertops highlighted with two decorative wall sconces. The original floor to ceiling terrazzo fireplace was replaced with a painted mantle and a marble surround. Twin chandeliers positioned over a generous dining table complete the new setting. The result is a dining arrangement which is formal and functional, comfortably seating 10 to 12 guests.
The existing de Giulio kitchen was in excellent condition requiring only minor improvements. A tin ceiling, illuminated with a modern wave of lighting, was added to provide a vintage yet whimsical touch to this amazing kitchen. The bookcase was removed to create space for snacking or studying at the newly installed custom made banquette. Sage painted walls, with custom window treatments and upholstery, compliment and complete the new look of this room.
The great room is the featured and most celebrated space of the house. This enormous room is clad with oak planked floors and walls including beamed cathedral ceiling with skylights. The original terrazzo marble fireplaces were replaced with a more rustic floor to ceiling stone fireplace complete with raised hearth and chunky mantle. A large plasma TV was mounted above the mantle for easy viewing from any angle. Custom made storage cabinets with hammered metal doors now flank the fireplace providing ample space for music and videos. Comfortable leather seating, with billiard tables, makes this location a place family and guests might never want to leave.
The garden room located just outside the great room included typical painted cedar walls, paver stone flooring, metal furniture and hanging plants. Our vision was to transform this tired garden room into a tranquil retreat with an Asian influence. The walls and ceiling were chemically peeled for a weathered appearance. Roman shades were added to soften the windows and control light entering the space. The existing pavers were enhanced with faux finishes, including chocolate and golden tones. The dining table is fashioned from barn planks and accommodates 10 guests. The seating area with clean styled woven furniture, accent chairs and an imported drum table provides a location for relaxation and meditation.
The luxurious master bathroom is a magical blend of vintage style and modern amenities. Subway tile, marble counters cherry cabinets and heated basket weave floors gives an impression of the past with the conveniences of the future.
The transformation of this North Shore beauty is now complete. Both family and guests can enjoy the refreshment and exhilaration experienced within this truly magnificent home.
